Jen Wheeler is Director, Teacher Professional Development Programs & Curricula at Street Law, Inc.
Jen works on a variety of Street Law’s teacher professional development and curriculum projects. She heads up New Perspectives, a program that helps teachers master the use of deliberative discussion to build positive relationships across differences.
Jen is an experienced educator and teacher trainer. She taught social studies for seven years in Baltimore City and directed curriculum development projects and teacher professional development programs at the Baltimore Urban Debate League.
Jen is drawn to helping teachers improve their craft. She says, “Teachers have a thirst for new learning and growth, which schools and districts cannot always provide. Working at a nonprofit like Street Law allows me to support and serve teachers, who ultimately support and serve our students.”
In her spare time, Jen loves to read, particularly science fiction. Despite coming in dead last in a 10K, she enjoys watching and playing sports and coaches an under-10 coed basketball team through the YMCA. She includes among her heroes her parents—a journalist (dad) and a doctor (mom)—who instilled in her the values of persistence and hard work and the importance of having a code of ethics.
Jen has a Master's of Arts in Teaching, with a specialization in secondary education social studies, from Johns Hopkins University.
