As more attention is focused on diversifying the legal profession, a comprehensive diversity strategy should include outreach to young people of color while they are still in high school. To that end, Street Law’s Legal Diversity Pipeline Program taps the knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm of the legal community to teach young people from diverse communities about everyday practical law and legal careers—with an ultimate goal of encouraging more young people of color to pursue careers in the legal profession.
Street Law’s Legal Diversity Pipeline Program sparks students’ interest in law and legal careers, encourages them to pursue higher education, exposes them to legal concepts and activities that simulate law practice, and connects them with positive, inspiring role models. Currently, 85 Pipeline Programs are being conducted at diverse high schools across the U.S. The programs are powered by more than 1,900 volunteer lawyers and legal professionals from more than 75 companies, law firms, and Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) Chapters.
Street Law is excited to welcome its newest Pipeline Program sites! The new cohort includes:
- ACC National Capital Region Chapter (Prince George’s County, MD)
- Dentons LLP (Washington, DC)
- Exelon and Venable LLP (Washington, DC)
- GE Capital (Norwalk, CT)
- Wells Fargo and Alston & Bird LLP (New York)
- Verizon (Silver Spring, MD and Valhalla, NY)
- Epstein, Becker & Green PC (New York)
A formal program evaluation found that after completing the program, participating students were 1) more interested in legal careers, 2) more aware of legal career pathways and the steps necessary to pursue a career in the legal profession, and 3) inspired and encouraged by the program’s volunteers.
