Tanzania
The Tanzanian team is uniquely
comprised
of representatives from the government,
judiciary,
education ministry and related
fields. The
Judiciary of Tanzania established
a Committee
on Public Legal Education, which
is headed
by Chief Justice Lameck Mfalia
from the Court
of Appeal. The PLE Committee
has the broader
involvement of team members from
the Tanzania
Institute of Education, the Institute
of
Adult Education, the University
of Dar Es
Salaam and the Tanzania Media
Women's Association.
Goals of the Committee on Public
Legal Education
are:
- Development of textbooks to teach civics
in secondary and primary schools.
- Creation of accompanying teachers manuals.
- Training of secondary school teachers to
teach PLE content.
The Court is held in relatively high regard
in Tanzania and the Justices
have used their
positions to influence the
Ministry of Education
to include Street Law content
in the National
Curriculum guidelines and quickly
adopt the
new curriculum.
The following activities have
been conducted
under the project:
Curriculum Development: The Committee on Public Legal Education
with the technical assistance of Street Law,
Inc. is working to edit primary and secondary
civics textbooks they have developed. The
team has almost completed revising the curriculum
and is planning to hire an illustrator for
the text and print texts in Swahili and English.
In December 1999, curriculum writer Dr. Sixtus
Kiwia traveled to the U.S. for a week to
work on completing the curriculum at the
Street Law office. During this time Dr. Kiwia
was exposed to Street Law's many other projects
in the U.S. and around the world relevant
to Tanzania.
Future activities planned under
this project
include:
- Writing of adult educational materials
- Writing of teacher's manuals
- Pilot testing of materials
