In Haiti Street Law, Inc. partnered with USIS-Port-au-Prince,
a team of Haitian curriculum writers and
other individuals active in civic education
to develop a democracy education program
using the text Democracy for All as its centerpiece.
The resulting text is used by Haitian civic
educators to teach Haitian youths about democracy.
A two-year regional grant from U.S. Agency for International Development
(USAID) provided funding to Street Law, Inc. to establish public
legal education programs in Bolivia, Ecuador, and
Panama. In each country, Street Law, Inc. provided training
and technical assistance to an in-country counterpart in civic education
content and methods, in addition to program and financial management,
and fundraising.
In Bolivia, the Center for Citizens' Rights (CDC)
provided public legal information to disadvantaged groups in non-school
settings (prisons, women's community groups). In Ecuador,
the Center for Law and Society (CIDES) established an innovative
program of nation-wide radio dramatizations of legal and constitutional
issues using law students as actors and scriptwriters. CIDES also
worked on conflict management with indigenous group. In Panama,
the Foundation for the Promotion of Women trains women community
leaders and law students to lead workshops on legal and human rights
for women.
A three-year National Endowment for Democracy
(NED) grant also helped Street Law, Inc.
establish a program in Chile with the School of Law at Catholic University
of Chile, resulting in new curriculum in
law, human rights, democratic principles
and mediation. This curriculum has been delivered
to thousands of students, disaffected teenagers,
and young offenders.
