WEST AFRICA
CITIZEN'S EXCHANGE PROJECT FOR CIVIC EDUCATORS
PROJECT SUMMARY
In
an effort to strengthen democratic citizen participation in
the region a pilot civic education project involving Ghana and
Nigeria is underway. The project promotes democratic education
and skill-building to empower citizens to engage constructively
in their societies. Aimed at creating a regional model for civic
education, the project includes opportunities for exchange and
enhanced learning between Ghanaian and Nigerian civic educators.
With the support of the U.S. State Department Bureau of Educational
and Cultural Affairs, Street Law Inc. is working with local
partners Civitas Nigeria and Civitas Ghana to develop country
specific curricula and programs aimed at promoting civic education
instruction in Ghana and Nigeria.
Based on a
model developed by Street Law, the Nigeria project will involve
training Nigerian law students and teachers to teach law-based
civic education in secondary schools. In Ghana, Street Law will
train teachers and work with teacher training institutes to promote
civics instruction in secondary schools and communities. Separate
U.S. Study Tours for civic education teams from each country marked
the official inauguration of each country project.
