A professional development opportunity for social studies teachers, the Baltimore Supreme Court Seminar is funded by the Baltimore City Public School System. The Seminar is modeled on the highly successful Supreme Court Summer Institute and is designed to expand and strengthen instruction about the history, operation, and cases of the U.S. Supreme Court.

We've mapped out the week's schedule and connected each night's program to key Street Law resources. Read more
October 3, 2009 The winning lesson plan comes from Rob Weaver, a second-year law student at the University of Miami law school. Rob’s lesson plan focuses on the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, teaching students about the Supreme Court’s precedents and the tests the Court has developed for deciding Establishment Clause cases. Students then argue both sides of a fictional Establishment Clause case. Read more
July 16, 2009 From July 7-10, 2009, 16 teachers attended the first ever Supreme Court Seminar for Baltimore Teachers at the University of Maryland School of Law. Read more
July 8, 2009 On June 29, 2009, the last day of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2008-2009 term, 30 Supreme Court Summer Institute participants visited the Court to hear the justices’ final decisions. Read more

May 1, 2009 The judicial nominations process is an excellent teaching topic, as it provides insight in to the operations of all three branches of government, the separation of their powers, and they ways in which they interact. Read more
July 8, 2008 Megan Lawlor is a social studies teacher and director of the law academy at Hirsch High School on the south side of Chicago. On June 19, 2008, she also became the 1,000th teacher to participate in the Supreme Court Institutes and Seminars for Teachers. Read more

Produced by New York City PBS affiliate WNET, the four-part documentary traces the history of the Court –- from its creation, through the Rehnquist years –- with particular emphasis on major cases and personal stories about the justices who have shaped our notions of justice and law.
