If we look to the future of Nepal, educating children in peaceable and socially inclusive democracy-building tools means that future generations of Nepali will be strong and educated civic participants, able to govern with justice. Education is at the heart of the ongoing armed conflict in Nepal: as a source of the conflict; as a manifestation of the conflict; and as one of the most promising ways to build a post-conflict nation-state where children understand and are experienced in the tools of peace-building and democratic participation.

Save the Children, Report on Acceleration Workshop, Kathmandu, Nepal, July 2009

Street Law Nepal program participants conduct a curriculum review as part of an accelerated workshop faciliated by Street Law staff in July 2009.

Over the last two years, Nepal has abolished its 240 year-old monarchy through peaceful protests by the people and established a new republic.  Their Constituent Assembly is drafting a new constitution and Nepal is building a multi-party democracy.

The goal of the Street Law project in Nepal is to achieve the following:

  • prepare students with the skills, attitudes, values, and knowledge necessary to understand and assert their rights within the rule of law
  • develop the values of tolerance and commitment to peace and justice
  • build critical thinking, problem solving and conflict resolution skills to function as citizens in a post-conflict environment.

To accomplish this Street Law is collaborating with Nepal’s Ministry of Education, Curriculum Development Centre, National Centre for Educational Development, Non Formal Education Centre, UNICEF, and Save the Children.  The process included the involvement of consultative groups including the Dalit Welfare Organization and the Bikalpa Gyan Tatha Bikas Kendra Nepal, a nonprofit providing education and resources for rural women.

In September 2008, Street Law worked with curriculum writers and consultative groups to develop lessons for the non-formal education courses.

In July 2009, Street Law worked with all the partners groups at an acceleration workshop.  The goal was to update and harmonize activities going on in both formal and non-formal educational settings and to create action plans for classroom implementation.
