The program’s goal was to help students in Central and Eastern Europe and the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union, develop the knowledge, skills, and character traits essential to preserving and improving democracy. This objective was achieved by working with teams of educators, non-governmental organization leaders, and policymakers in the 12 participating countries. DEEP also provided counterparts in the U.S. with opportunities to learn about emerging democracies and to understand the challenges faced in developing and sustaining democratic societies.
The Democracy Education Exchange Project (DEEP) was funded by the United States Department of Education.
