Street Law / Newsroom / Law School-Based Street Law Programs Implement Diversity Initiatives

Street Law, Inc. and the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) have developed an initiative to address the need for diversity within the law school applicant pool and legal profession at large. The legal profession lags well behind other fields when it comes to minority representation. Total minority representation among lawyers is about 9.7%, compared to 20.8% among accountants and auditors, 24.6% among physicians and surgeons, and 18.2% among college and university teachers. [1]
Street Law awarded grants in the amount of $7,000 (over a two-year period) to each of ten law schools selected to participate in the initiative. Recipients of the mini-grants, now over six months into their projects, are working to educate young people of color about the law and legal career options in order to encourage them to pursue legal careers. Below are summaries of activities at North Carolina Central School of Law and University of Miami School of Law. For updates on activities at the other participating law schools, visit the Law School Diversity Pipeline Initiative web pages.
North Carolina Central School of Law hosted a field trip to the law school for 60 high school students. The visiting students met alumni, participated in sessions on law school admissions, legal careers, and participated in a mock trial.
University of Miami School of Law’s Center for Ethics and Public Service created the Miami Street Law Fellowship Program—a three day law immersion for high school students over spring break. The three day program served 23 high school students who have an interest in studying law.
