Street Law / Newsroom / Street Law Mourns the Loss of David Bostrom
by
David Bostrom, a long-time friend of Street Law and the LRE community, passed away on September 12, 2008, after an extended illness.
September 16, 2008 | Wilmington, DE
On September 12, 2008, Street Law lost its dear friend and ally, David Bostrom.
David had a long, decorated career in law enforcement. During his 23 years with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC, he served as commander of the Special Operations Division in the Second District.
After retiring from the force, David held leadership positions at the Police Foundation, Police Assessment Associates, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police and served as the public safety director for Wilmington, DE. In 2007, David was selected by the mayor of Tulsa, OK, to act as the city’s interim police chief.
David dedicated much of his career to community policing—a policing philosophy that promotes a relationship of trust and respect between police officers and the public, resulting in safer communities. Street Law has shared his vision for more than 30 years, offering curricula, training, and programs to help school- and community-based officers build positive relationships with young people while teaching them important skills and information.
David was always extremely willing to assist Street Law in its work with law enforcement officers. Over the years, he contributed ideas to Street Law’s curricula for police officers, lent his name to outreach efforts, addressed and welcomed police offers attending trainings, recommended contacts, and met with potential funders. His contributions significantly helped Street Law improve and extend its law enforcement programs and will always be remembered and appreciated.
David was an active member of Street Law, Inc.’s board of directors since he joined in December 2004. He served on the awards committee that selected honorees for Street Law’s annual Awards Dinner.
Other recent contributions include his review of a chapter about police for the upcoming eighth edition of the Street Law textbook. He also facilitated a session for 32 eighth graders at KIPP DC: KEY Academy as part of Street Law’s Breakfast with a Legend program.
