Street Law, Inc. has partnered with UNICEF to encourage a culture of peace, human rights, and civic literacy in Nepal through training workshops and curriculum development.
In the first half of 2008, Street Law and UNICEF staff traveled to Nepal to conduct a series of workshops designed to achieve the following:
The ultimate goal of the program is to integrate civic education and human rights into Nepal’s national curriculum from kindergarten to high school. If achieved, young people will develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to understand and assert their human rights within the framework of the rule of law. They will also cultivate valuable critical thinking, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills to help them function as citizens in a post-conflict environment.
In September 2008, two Street Law staff members will travel to Nepal to meet with leaders from community-based sites. Using the Democracy for All and Human Rights for All texts as a guide, staff will spend two weeks helping develop customized curricula for the leaders to use with their constituencies, predominantly in the country’s rural areas.
Discussions regarding the development of a law school-based program at Kathmandu School of Law are also in the works.
