Street Law, Inc. Launches New Program in the District for Youth Aging-Out of Foster Care

Street Law, Inc., a national leader in law-related education, is launching an exciting new DC pilot initiative, Street Law for Youth in Transition. The training is on June 7, 2005, from 8:30 AM – 4 PM at the George Washington University Law Center, 716 20th Street NW, Jacob Burns Building, Room 418.

This DC initiative, supported by the Freddie Mac Foundation, comes out of several years of discussions and encouragement from the foster care, homeless/runaway youth, and juvenile justice “re-entry” communities. The vision of the program is simple: youth who understand the laws and systems that surround them, and who have the skills to use that knowledge effectively, will be more successful in their transition to legal adulthood. This is especially important for those youth who, for various reasons, do not have access to the support provided by family and community resources.

Street Law, Inc. is piloting new and innovative models for delivering participatory educational programming to young people in independent living, re-entry, and transitional programs. The June 7th training will feature hands on guidance in teaching law-related education for youth aging out of foster care. Street Law, Inc. staff and local attorneys will demonstrate practical law lessons from the Street Law for Youth in Transition manual and discuss strategies for implementation. The manual was developed with funding and support from the University of Oklahoma National Resource Center for Youth Services.
