The Honorable Janet Reno receives 2007 Chesterfield Smith Award

Former Attorney General Janet Reno received the 2007 Chesterfield Smith Award for championing innovative programs to teach young people about their rights and responsibilities under the law.

Street Law, Inc. held its Third Annual Awards Dinner on April 25, 2007, in Washington, DC.  At this sold-out event, Street Law honored those who have made a significant impact on the teaching of law, democracy, and human rights.

Former Attorney General Janet Reno received the 2007 Chesterfield Smith Award for championing innovative programs to teach young people about their rights and responsibilities under the law. 

Street Law honored the Coca-Cola Company Legal Division with this year’s Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Award for its groundbreaking work placing lawyers in Atlanta public school classrooms to teach practical law to high school students as part of the Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Program.

The Advocate of the Year Award was presented to Sameer Jarrah of the Arab World Center for Democracy Development & Human Rights.  Jarrah played a key role in Street Law’s Connecting Islam and Democracy program, which educates Muslims about the connections between the tenets of Islam and the principles of democracy. 

Street Law also presented two Educator of the Year Awards.  Laura Dym Cohen of Southwestern Law School was honored for creating a clinical externship in which law students teach law-related life skills to Los Angeles youth aging out of foster care.  Cathy Ruffing, a social studies teacher, was honored for developing a law elective course for the Fairfax County Public Schools.
