Street Law, Inc. is proud to announce the recipient of its 2012 Law Firm Community Service Award: Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP. This award is given annually to a law firm that, through participation in a Street Law program, has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to service in its community. The award will be presented at Street Law’s Annual Awards Dinner on April 25, 2012, in Washington, DC.

Paul Weiss was selected as this year’s honoree for the instrumental role it played in the launch of Street Law's Summer Associates Program—a new Street Law program for D.C. law firms.

In 2011, Street Law approached Paul Weiss with an idea for a new program to directly involve summer associates in the community by teaching practical law lessons to young people participating in DC’s Summer Youth Employment Program, an initiative of the DC Department of Employment Services. Street Law staff trained the law students in interactive teaching methods and developed lesson plans on relevant topics that the youths could use in both their workplaces and their everyday lives.

Once a week the teens from the Youth Employment Program visited the Paul Weiss office and participated in lessons and activities about employment law, advocacy, and conflict resolution taught by the summer associates. They then joined the law students and several associates for lunch—providing an informal opportunity to explore career choices. The program culminated in a negotiation showcase event which allowed the teens to demonstrate their newly-acquired conflict resolution and advocacy skills to their instructors and employers.

The program enhanced the summer associates’ experiences by giving them the opportunity to engage in a meaningful community service program and a chance to experience the public interest/pro bono aspect of life at a law firm.

As Street Law prepares to open up the Summer Associates Program to additional D.C. law firms, attorneys and staff from Paul Weiss are hosting an outreach luncheon and sharing their experiences with the program with interested law firms.

Beyond its participation in programs, Paul Weiss continues to support Street Law’s mission through sponsorship of the Annual Awards Dinner and membership on Street Law’s Board of Directors.
