Street Law, Inc. is proud to announce the recipient of its 2012 Legal Diversity Pipeline Award—the legal department at Verizon Communications Inc. The award will be presented at the Street Law Awards Dinner on April 25, 2012, in Washington, DC. Randy Milch, executive vice president and general counsel, will accept the award on behalf of the department.
Verizon’s legal department participates in Street Law's Diversity Pipeline Programs, where they work to encourage young people of color to pursue legal careers by providing them with role models, career education, and hands-on experiences in the legal field.
Verizon began participating in the Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Program in fall 2009. Legal department volunteers in Basking Ridge, NJ taught lessons in law classes at New Brunswick and Franklin High Schools and Arlington, VA-based volunteers partnered with J.E.B. Stuart High School in nearby Fairfax, VA.
In fall 2011, Verizon expanded the program to Ashburn, VA where volunteers taught civil law to students at South Lakes High School in Reston, VA.
Verizon volunteers in Arlington, VA have expanded their program to include a college readiness aspect, in which volunteers provide their students with assistance in preparing college applications.
Verizon legal department volunteers also work with DLA Piper (US) LLP—its partner law firm in several pro bono activities—to implement the Law Firm Diversity Pipeline Program at University of Chicago Charter School–Woodlawn. Volunteers from DLA Piper also participate in Verizon’s other Pipeline activities. Verizon attorneys also partnered with the Association of Corporate Counsel, University of California-Irvine law school students, and other companies to bring the program to students at Middle College High School in San Pablo, CA.
Today, more than 100 Verizon lawyers, paralegals, and other legal professionals volunteer to participate in the Pipeline Programs, creating and teaching lessons on contracts, intellectual property law, employment law, constitutional law, and identity theft and hosting field trips where the volunteers engage students in interactive workshops and legal simulations.
In 2012, Verizon’s relationship with Street Law will expand to include Verizon UK Limited in Reading, England. Volunteer lawyers will work with 14- and 15-year-olds to develop their awareness and understanding of the law as part of the Lawyers in Schools program run by the Citizenship Foundation—Street Law, Inc.’s sister organization.
Each year, the Legal Diversity Pipeline Award is presented to an individual, corporate legal department, law firm, or law school for outstanding participation in one of Street Law's Diversity Pipeline Programs. Recipients are selected based on the quality of the programming, the number of students reached, innovative methods and approaches, and work towards growing and strengthening the program in the legal community. Past recipients of Street Law’s Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Award include the following:
