Former solicitor general Gregory G. Garre presents the 2009 Chesterfield Smith Award to his predecessor, Paul D. Clement.
April 27, 2009 | Washington, DC
On April 22, 2009, at the Fairmont Washington D.C., leaders from the fields of law, education, business, and civic affairs celebrated an elegant evening honoring those who have contributed greatly to Street Law’s mission.
Every year, Street Law presents its highest honor—the Chesterfield Smith Award—to someone whose contributions have made a significant impact on the teaching of law, democracy, and human rights. This year’s recipient was the Honorable Paul D. Clement, former solicitor general of the United States, for his involvement in Street Law’s Supreme Court Institutes and Seminars and the Breakfast with a Legend program. Previous recipients of this award include the Honorable Sandra Day O’Connor, Mrs. Cecilia Marshall (wife of the late Thurgood Marshall), and the Honorable Janet Reno.
The law department at Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. was honored with Street Law’s Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Award was for its continued contribution and dedication to the Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Program. The company generously created a promotional video about the program, which places corporate lawyers in nearby diverse high school law classes in an effort to engage students of color in the study of law and encourage them to consider careers in the legal profession. The volunteers in Turner’s legal department employ exciting media and entertainment-related scenarios during their classroom visits to their partner school, and give students a chance to be lawyers for the day during a field trip to the company’s CNN Center.
Street Law’s 2009 Advocate of the Year was Professor David Jan McQuoid-Mason, founder of the South African Street Law program, for his efforts in spreading Street Law around the globe. Lori Urogdy Eiler of the Shaw High School Leadership Academy in East Cleveland, Ohio, received the Educator of the Year Award, honoring her dedication to students and use of innovative law-related curricula.
Street Law would like to thank the generous supporters of the event, especially our platinum-level sponsor, King & Spalding LLP.
