Street Law / Newsroom / Update on inaugural year of NALP/Street Law Legal Diversity Pipeline Program
by
February 26, 2009 | Washington, DC
Five law firms will be holding the culminating events in their NALP/Street Law Legal Diversity Pipeline Programs this spring. The inaugural year law firms—Kirkland & Ellis LLP (San Francisco), Troutman Sanders LLP (Atlanta), Wachtell Rosen Lipton & Katz (New York), Hunton & Williams (Richmond), and Holland & Knight (Washington, DC)—will all hold one-day conferences for diverse groups of participating high school students in April and May.
These conferences will offer exciting and engaging legal activities for the high school students. At each site, students will participate in hands-on, interactive workshops where they get to play the roles of legal professionals in solving a legal problem or dispute. Workshops will center on a broad range of themes, from employment law, contracts, and copyrights to the Fourth Amendment, lobbying, and remedies against online bullying. Students have been preparing in class with visits from professionals at participating firms. Through these classroom visits, the one-day conference and follow up activities, the program builds important legal and life skills while educating students about the law and about legal careers. The ultimate aim of the Legal Diversity Pipeline Program is to increase diversity in the legal profession by encouraging more young people of color to pursue legal careers.
The April and May conferences will also include legal career-focused activities through which students can learn more about the legal profession, the wide variety of legal career options, and how to prepare now to pursue a legal career. The lawyers and other legal professionals will serve as career role models and resources for the students as they explore their future career paths. Area law schools will also participate in each conference, providing the high school students with another perspective of the path to a legal career.
Professionals from the five participating firms have been preparing for their participation since December and January, beginning with a training session led by Street Law staff. Each firm is provided with a comprehensive program guide that includes lessons and workshops that they can use as-is or modify to fit their objectives. Each firm also has the opportunity to create their own lessons and workshops with guidance from Street Law. Street Law and NALP also secured the partnerships with local high schools and provide ongoing support to the firms throughout the program.
The program is now accepting inquiries from law firms interested in participating during the 2009-10 school year. Street Law will be represented in the exhibit hall at NALP’s 2009 Annual Education Conference, April 1-4, in Washington, D.C. (www.nalp.org/events).
