Law School Diversity Pipeline program evaluation findings released

The program evaluation showed that many participating students reported increased interest in legal careers, increased knowledge about legal careers, and that they felt inspired and encouraged by the law students.

Street Law, Inc. and independent consultant Wendy Richardson, PhD, recently completed an evaluation of the Law School Diversity Pipeline program, a partnership between Street Law and the Law School Admission Council (LSAC).

The Law School Diversity Pipeline program enhances existing Street Law programs at U.S. law schools to encourage more young people of color to pursue legal careers.  Law school-based Street Law programs send law students into high schools and community-based setting to teach about practical law.  Law schools in the Diversity Pipeline program created field trips, law camps, clubs, mentoring programs, and adjusted their teaching to teach young people more about legal careers and support their pursuit of the legal profession.

The program evaluation showed that many participating students reported increased interest in legal careers, increased knowledge about legal careers, and that they felt inspired and encouraged by the law students.  More than a third of the high school students increased the frequency with which they undertook career-related activities like looking for information about college and law school, or talking to their parents, teachers, or friends about pursuing a legal career.  Students who attended a field trip at one of the sites reported higher interest, knowledge, and inspiration than students who did not attend.

The evaluation also showed some room for improvement.  Students’ scores on a test about the legal profession did not improve after the program, which suggests that the sites may need to be more specific in the information they share with students about legal careers.

Street Law, Inc. will use the evaluation results to make specific recommendations for improvement to the program sites and to inform the way in which it encourages growth of the program.  The evaluation has informed the lessons, activities, and advice included in a forthcoming curriculum and handbook about the program.

Program assessment, evaluation, and review is a critical part of Street Laws programming.  We understand the importance of ongoing review of program goals, outcomes, and accomplishments with an eye toward improvement.  You can find more evaluations of Street Law programs at www.streetlaw.org/evaluation.
