2013 Civics and Civil Rights Institute
This professional development institute provides educators with a valuable opportunity to expand their knowledge and learn new methods for teaching about civil rights.
The Civics & Civil Rights Institute is part of Closing the Gap: Civic Leadership for Youth, an initiative through which African American students will learn about civil rights and advocacy with an end goal of developing a deep understanding of the importance and impact of the civil rights movement and how they can be active, engaged members of their communities.
The Institute is open to 20 high school social studies teachers from CT, DC, DE, MA, MD, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, and VA.
The Institute includes sessions led by civil rights leaders who give teachers an in-depth understanding of key periods in both past and present civil rights movements as well as, legal concepts and civil rights issues related to public policy, civic engagement, and advocacy.
The Institute prepares teachers to use interactive methods and community resources to teach about civil rights and align the issues with components of their social studies standards. Beyond the Institute, teachers will be equipped with tools to enhance their classrooms using primary source documents and online resources from the National Archives.
The application deadline for the Institute is April 1, 2013.

$100 registration fee (due two weeks after you are accepted) includes all materials and several meals.
Housing for participants will be available at the Washington Court on the nights of July 9, 10, and 11. The registration fee will cover lodging expenses for teachers willing to share a room with another participant. Teachers who want their own room will pay an additional lodging fee of $90 ($30/night).
Participants who conduct trainings for other teachers or develop and teach a civil rights lesson to their students after completing the Institute are eligible to receive a stipend of $150.
Upon completion of the Institute, each participant receives a certificate verifying the number of contact hours completed (exact number of hours TBD). Your participation may count toward continuing education/ professional development hours. However, requirements vary by school district. Please check with your district to see if the Civic and Civil Rights Institute satisfies the eligibility requirements.
