About Chesterfield Smith

Cherterfield Smith headshot

The Chesterfield Smith Award memorializes "the conscience of the legal profession."

Chesterfield Smith (1917-2003) was a major force in American law and politics.  He founded the law firm of Holland & Knight, served as president of the American Bar Association, and also served as chairman of the Street Law, Inc. board of directors.

Often called “the conscience of the legal profession,” he believed that lawyers must have an unselfish involvement in essential public service and encouraged his colleagues to be active in their communities.

Street Law created the Chesterfield Smith Award in 2005, to honor and celebrate his contributions to the legal system and Street Law by acknowledging the great achievements of others who work to empower people through a practical understanding of the law.
