Background

In 1998, the Open Society Institute/Street Law Network Program began working with a group of teachers and attorneys in Kiev to develop a series of practical law texts to be used in legal education classes. By 2001, three Street Law texts were published and teachers throughout Ukraine were trained in how to implement the curricula; these texts are still in use today.

Based on the work done as part of Open Society Institute/Street Law Network Program, Teachers for Democracy and Partnership was founded in 2002. This non-governmental organization promotes democracy and social partnership in education by conducting innovative trainings and workshops and adapting and publishing Street Law texts.

Teachers for Democracy and Partnership implemented Street Law’s Youth Act! program as part of the Democracy Education Exchange Project (DEEP).

Law school-based Street Law programs were developed in Danskz and other Ukrainian cities by the Constitutional and Legal Policy Institute, now known as the Open Society Justice Initiative.

Teachers for Democracy and Partnership participates in the Deliberating in a Democracy program and coordinates the participation of seven schools in Ukraine. Visit the Ukraine section of the Deliberating in a Democracy web site to learn more.
