Background

During the early 1990s, Ugandan NGOs formed a country-wide network aimed to promote practical law to all citizens. Key members of the consortium were: FIDA-Uganda (The Ugandan Association of Women Lawyers) and HURIPEC (the Human Rights and Peace Centre).

Uganda’s program activities included a needs assessment of homeless children and juvenile delinquents and the creation of curriculum and teaching materials.  They conducted a pilot program targeting juvenile delinquents, school-going and non-school-going youths. FIDA Uganda sent an intern to the Street Law South Africa and participated in the U.S. Street Law Exchange.

Today, the network continues to provide legal education materials to schools and community-based organizations throughout Uganda.
