Background

During the early 1990s, Tanzania’s public legal education efforts were spearheaded by the judiciary-formed Committee on Public Legal Education, headed by Justice Mfalila (retired) of the Court of Appeals.  The Committee was comprised of members from the Tanzania Institute of Education, the Institute of Adult Education, the University of Dar-es-Salaam, and the Tanzania Media Women’s Association.

With the help of Street Law staff, the Committee sponsored workshops, participated in a U.S. exchange program, and developed and distributed public legal education materials.  The Committee succeeded in getting Street Law content included in the national curriculum and in establishing guidelines for secondary schools civics teachers.
