Status: Active
Street Law, Inc.'s partner organization in Kyrgyzstan is the Public Foundation of Childhood Support.
The Public Foundation of Childhood Support developed law school-based Street Law programs in Bisjkek and Osh, Kyrgyzstan, as part of the Open Society Institute/Street Law Network Program from 1998–2003. The organization also developed multiple grade levels texts of a secondary practical law textbook—We and the Law.
In 2006, with the support of the American Bar Association’s Rule of Law Initiative (ABA/ROLI), the Public Foundation of Childhood Support started a law school-based Street Law program at Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University. Law students still use We and Law to teach practical law, democracy and human rights lessons in high schools and madrasahs (Islamic educational institutions).
In spring 2011, with the help of a grant from the ACE Insurance Company, Street Law and the Public Foundation of Childhood Support partnered to improve the methods and resources for teaching about the rule of law in Kyrgyzstan. Staff organized and implemented training workshops for 77 teachers in Bishkek and Osh. The trained teachers will use the principles of democracy and the deliberation technique in their classrooms to further the understanding of the rule of law—affecting over 1,000 students and developing skills that equip them to be more tolerant, law abiding, informed members of their communities.
We and the Law: a practical law text for Kyrgyz.
