The Association for the Advancement of Education (AAE) is a non-governmental organization based in Cairo, Egypt. AAE works in the governorates of Cairo, Giza, and Minya, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education to develop partnerships between the schools and the community. In 2006, trainers from AAE to conducted workshops with over 325 teachers, students, and parent councils in five sites—Tanta, Minya, Cairo, Giza and Siwa—using Islam and Democracy: Toward Effective Citizenship.
The Assuit Human Rights Association (AHRA)—based in Assiut, Egypt—aims to enhance and protect human rights in Upper Egypt. Their goals are to enable people to understand their rights, increase their awareness when dealing with governmental authorities, discuss human right issues while boosting womens’ rights, and enhance the rights of all Egyptian children. AHRA held six day-long workshops for 150 community members using the Connecting Islam and Democracy text as a guide. The theme of each workshop coincided with the six chapters of the text.
Street Law, in partnership with the Assiut Human Rights Association, implemented a year-long leadership development project to teach young adults (ages 18–30) in Upper Egypt how to take part in civic life by viewing community problems through the lens of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention of the Rights of the Child.
The project’s goal was to develop in young Egyptians the leadership, vision, and skills necessary to advocate for meaningful change in their communities and to promote a human rights framework as an effective tool to enhance democratic principles in everyday culture and life.
Street Law trained three teams of leaders to teach a course in which young adults learned about human rights, conducted community assessments, analyzed the root causes of selected problems at the public policy level, and worked to solve these problems through proven advocacy techniques like lobbying, coalition building, letter writing campaigns, and e-mail action alerts.
