In celebration of Supreme Court Week, we've gathered a few of the latest resources about some fascinating, and important topics!

New Justice: Elena Kagan

The Supreme Court welcomes a new justice this term, former Solicitor General Elena Kagan. Here we link to some background information about Justice Kagan, notes about her upcoming first term, and commentary from Supreme Court Institute resource expert Barbara Perry.

Elena Kagan has recused herself from several cases this fall - Washington Briefs published a list of the cases she's recused from, and NPR did a story on the recusals.

Barbara Perry has written a retrospective on the arc of Justice Stevens’ career, as well as a short commentary about the potential impact of having three women serve on the Court together, both for Larry Sabato's Crystal Ball.

New Books and Videos; Speeches and Interviews with the Justices

Supreme Court Institute resource expert Cliff Sloan (a frequent panelist during the Institute’s Nominations session) has written a new book: The Great Decision: Jefferson, Adams, Marshall, and the Battle for the Supreme Court.
C-SPAN has released their documentary and accompanying book: The Supreme Court and The Supreme Court: A C-SPAN Book, Featuring the Justices in their Own Words. C-SPAN Classroom also has tons of new resources and videos for teachers.
PBS also released three videos as part of as series “The Best of MacNeil/Lehrer” from the NewsHour: Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the NewsHour, Supreme Court Justices Remembered, In Their Own Words: Conversations with Supreme Court Justices.
Straight from the source: several justices gave speeches, were interviewed, or held Q&A sessions with students over the summer. Here’s a sampling of where they were and what they said:
- Justice Breyer wrote a new book – Making Our Democracy Work, and went on a book tour. Consequently, you can see/hear/read him at NBC Nightly News, Good Morning America, Larry King Live, and NPR’s Fresh Air.
- Justices Sotomayor, Thomas, and Scalia spoke at law schools. The blog Volokh Conspiracy has a recap of Justice Sotomayor’s Q&A at Case Western Reserve; the Denver Post has a story on her remarks at the University of Denver's Sturm College of Law. The Knoxville News Sentinel has an account of Justice Thomas’s speech at Univ. Tennessee law school. The San Francisco Chronicle reports on Justice Scalia’s appearance at U.C. Hastings School of Law.
- Justice Ginsburg addressed the 2010 Tenth Circuit Bench and Bar Conference. She read a speech that was originally to have been delivered by her late husband, and then spoke about similarities and differences between the U.S. and Canadian judicial systems. C-SPAN has video. Justice Ginsburg also did an interview with the ABA Journal, and the podcast is available in part 1 and part 2.

SCOTUSblog & Online Resources

One of the best online resources about the U.S. Supreme Court, SCOTUSblog, revamped and retooled over the summer. The new look, version 4.0, is easier to search, incorporates Scotuswiki’s resources about every single case that comes before the Court, has an accessible feature on statistics for the current term, and has a new mobile version. Tom Goldstein (another Supreme Court Institute resource expert)has a post that introduces you to the new blog.
SCOTUSblog’s Plain English feature is available as a RSS feed. Visit the RSS Feed page to set up a feed to read the Plain English posts, which summarize certain cases or events at the Court for non-lawyers. The blog publishes a Plain English post about once per week.
