Teaching democracy

As a young girl growing up in Soviet-controlled Azerbaijan, Tarana Aliyeva was taught that America was a land of greedy, warmongering people. “We learned all about American imperialism. Many of us thought the people over here were violent and wanted to kill us,” Aliyeva said. But last Wednesday, the 40-year-old Aliyeva and five other Azeri/English teachers received a warm welcome from Centreville High School, where they sat in on a senior government class and observed how the democratic process is taught in American schools.
