2013 Supreme Court Summer Institute for Teachers

Since it began in 1995, the Supreme Court Summer Institute for Teachers has brought together over 900 teachers from across the country to convene in Washington, DC, for six days of educational activities related to teaching about the U.S. Supreme Court. The Institute is co-sponsored by the Supreme Court Historical Society.

The Institute includes sessions led by Supreme Court experts, journalists, authors, and attorneys, who give teachers an in-depth understanding of how the Court chooses and decides cases, and what it is like to argue before the Court. The Institute covers six current or recent cases. This exciting opportunity culminates with a visit to the Court to hear decisions handed down and a private reception at the Court.

The Institute prepares teachers to use innovative teaching methods with current and past cases. Beyond the content-rich sessions and activities, teachers are also equipped with the skills and tools to train fellow teachers at home.

Application Details and Eligibility

  • 30 teachers from across the country will be accepted for each Institute (60 total)
  • Admission is based on a competitive application process
  • Applicants must teach or supervise secondary social studies or law-related education
  • Applicants must commit to attend all sessions and train other secondary school teachers
  • Teachers who have already attended one of Street Law's Supreme Court Institutes or Seminars are not eligible for this program
  • Applicants from ethnic and racial minorities, people teaching in urban schools or on Native American reservations, and people new to the teaching profession are encouraged to apply

Application Instructions

  1. First time applicants should complete and submit the online application form by March 11, 2013. Applicants who have previously applied to the Summer Institute are welcome to complete a new application or can contact Charlotte Friar to "reactivate" their application from the prior year. New applications and reactivated applications must be received by March 11, 2013.
  2. Submit to Street Law, Inc. a letter of support from your principal or supervisor by March 11, 2013. Letters of support should convey your supervisor's approval for your attendance and support for you to train others in your school, district, or state upon your return. E-mail, fax, or mail to:

  3. All applicants will be notified of their status no later than April 1, 2013. Please do not attempt to pay your registration fee or make other arrangements until you are notified of your acceptance.

  • Hotel Information
    Participants will be eligible for discounted rooms at the Washington Court. Teachers willing to share a room with another participant will pay $175 for the week ($35/night), while teachers who want their own room will pay $450 for the week ($90/night).
  • Registration Fee
    $150 registration fee (due two weeks after you are accepted) includes all materials and several meals.
  • Stipend
    Participants who conduct trainings for other teachers after completing the Institute are eligible to receive a stipend of $200.
  • Opportunities for Continuing Education Credit
    Upon completion of the Institute, each participant receives a certificate verifying 35 contact hours. Your participation may count toward continuing education/ professional development hours. However, requirements vary by school district. Please check with your district to see if the Summer Institute satisfies the eligibility requirements.
