On April 17, 2008, Leon Silverman—chairman of the Supreme Court Historical Society’s board of trustees and of counsel at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP—received the Chesterfield Smith Award at Street Law’s 2008 Awards Dinner. The Honorable William T. Coleman, Jr., presented the award to Mr. Silverman in front of a sold-out crowd at the Fairmont Washington, D.C.

Named in honor of Chesterfield Smith—a major force in American law and politics— this award celebrates his contributions to Street Law and the U.S. legal system by acknowledging the great achievements of others who work to empower people through a practical understanding of the law.  Past recipients include the Honorable Sandra Day O’Connor, Mrs. Thurgood Marshall, and the Honorable Janet Reno.

Mr. Silverman has long been an enthusiastic supporter of Street Law’s work. During his tenure as president of the Supreme Court Historical Society, the organization began co-sponsoring Street Law’s Supreme Court Summer Institute for Teachers. Since its inception in 1995, the Institute has brought over 700 social studies teachers from across the country to Washington for six days of educational activities related to teaching about the Supreme Court of the United States. Mr. Silverman also played a key role in expanding this program to offer special Supreme Court Seminars exclusively for Washington, DC, New York City, and St. Louis area teachers.

Street Law also honored the law departments of Marriott International, Inc. and Marriott Vacation Club International, Inc. with the Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Award.  The departments were recognized for their groundbreaking work as part of Street Law’s Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Program, a program that places corporate lawyers in nearby diverse high school law classes in an effort to engage the students, teach them more about civil law, and encourage them to consider careers in the legal profession.

Also honored were Street Law’s Advocate of the Year—Pat Quann of the Delaware Law Related Education Center, Inc., and two Educators of the Year—the Honorable James P. Swanger of the District Court of Clark County in Vancouver, WA, and Kerry Sylvia of Cardozo Senior High School in Washington, DC.
