On April 20, 2006, more than 300 Street Law supporters gathered at The Fairmont Washington, DC, for the Second Annual Street Law Awards Dinner, an event created to give Street Law an opportunity to recognize key individuals for their contributions to Street Law.
Cecilia Marshall, wife of the late Thurgood Marshall, was the recipient of the 2006 Chesterfield Smith Award. Mrs. Marshall has been a favorite guest at Street Law’s Supreme Court Institutes and Seminars. Co-sponsored by Street Law, Inc. and the Supreme Court Historical Society, the Supreme Court Institutes and Seminars train some of the best law, government and history teachers in the country to better teach about the U.S. Supreme Court. Mrs. Marshall attends receptions at the Court where she mingles and converses with the teachers. The teachers often rank this experience as a highlight of the Institute. The Honorable Sandra Day O’Connor, also a long-time Street Law supporter and the winner of last year’s Chesterfield Smith Award, presented the award to Mrs. Marshall.
E. Christopher Johnson, Jr., vice president and general counsel of General Motors North America, was honored with Street Law’s first Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Award. At GM he heads a team of lawyers, paralegals, and support staff who work closely with four Detroit Public High Schools and their Street Law classes as part of the Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Program.
Receiving the Advocate of the Year Award was Joannie Delgado Collins of the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and Education. She was recognized for creating and strengthening what many people consider to be the best model for law-related education training for police and probation officers in the nation.
The 2006 Educator of the Year Award recipient was Patrick McGillicuddy, a U.S. History teacher at South Brooklyn Community School, a school serving previously truant youth. McGillicuddy was selected because of his innovative use of moot courts in the classroom.
Street Law looks forward to continuing the annual dinner tradition in 2007. Thank you to the sponsors who made the evening possible and whose contributions support important Street Law, Inc. programs.
