"There is a risk to constitutional government if a substantial portion of the American public does not understand the justice system ... We have to make American civic education real again."
- Justice David H. Souter*
Dear Friends,
For more than 35 years, Street Law initiatives have been educating about the law and how it affects all of us in our everyday lives. You have participated in these programs with us, working to empower students through practical legal education. You share our vision of a world where all people are active, informed citizens who know their rights and responsibilities under the law. And all of us, like Justice Souter, understand that in order to achieve this vision, civic education must be made a priority in our schools and communities.
With people like you on the front lines, Street Law has made great strides. You’ve helped a young Jamaican immigrant discover a passion for law in high school and become the youngest partner at a prestigious national law firm. You’ve helped a struggling East Cleveland, OH, high school get back on track as a law- and public service-themed school. Each year, you’ve placed more than 1,000 law students in classrooms, community-based settings, and correctional facilities to teach practical law. And your work hasn’t stopped at our borders—you’ve taken education about law, democracy, and human rights to emerging democracies from Mongolia to Moldova.
But now, when meeting the growing need for high-quality civic education programs is more important than ever, we need you—the individuals who give life to our programs—to make a financial contribution to Street Law, Inc. Your gift will help us bring civic education to more classrooms by training teachers and developing top-rate curricula for them to use. It will breathe new life into programs focusing on the special educational needs of at-risk youth and people in correctional facilities. And it will allow us to grow and enrich our programs working toward a more diverse legal profession.
We appreciate all that you’ve done for Street Law in the past, and hope you will be part of our future by giving generously.
Sincerely,
Lee Arbetman
Executive Director
