Thanks to generous funding from the Law School Admission Council (LSAC), Street Law, Inc. will partner with ten law schools to help diversify the legal profession. Law schools that have a Street Law program – where law students teach local high school classes about practical law – will develop a career choice component designed to encourage students of color to continue their education and pursue legal careers.
In October, Street Law, Inc. will award mini-grants to law schools selected to participate in the initiative. Law school partners will work with Street Law and LSAC to expand their programs to include mentoring, shadowing a lawyer, legal internships, lessons on pathways to law school, or other components to encourage students to pursue legal careers.
On December 10-12, 2006, participating law schools, along with Street Law and LSAC staff, will convene in Baltimore, MD, to explore ways to incorporate activities into Street Law high school classes that will encourage minority students to pursue a law career. Law schools will then spend the next 18 months developing and piloting their programs This two-year initiative will reach approximately 5,000 high school students, an overwhelming majority of whom will be students of color.
