This summer, Street Law, Inc. completed its 12th successful year of the Supreme Court Summer Institute and its 7th year of the Washington, D.C. area Supreme Court Seminar, culminating with receptions at the Court hosted by the Chief Justice and Justice Souter.  Sixty teachers from across the country attended the Summer Institute, spread over two week-long session, while 24 DC area teachers attended the Seminar.

Highlights from the Summer Institute included a new session on interest groups and the Court featuring Robin Conrad (Senior VP at the National Chamber Litigation Center) and Richard Katskee (Assistant Legal Director at Americans United for Separation of Church and State).  Featured speakers and resource people also included:

  • Akin Gump’s Tom Goldstein assisting with the moot court of Georgia v. Randolph, a case he argued at the Supreme Court;
  • Georgetown University Law Center's Professor Richard Lazarus lecturing on Supreme Court practice;
  • Two prominent Supreme Court journalists, Lyle Denniston and Joan Biskupic, leading discussions on the media and the Court; and
  • Experts from the Solicitor General’s office helping the teachers to learn about key cases from the 2005-06 term.

The Supreme Court Seminar for DC area teachers involved educators from the District of Columbia as well as five suburban counties in Maryland and Virginia.  The first component of this program, the three day seminar in July on the Court and its cases, is followed by teacher roundtable discussions in the fall and a day at the Court to hear oral arguments in the winter.  A June 2007, reception at the Court will wrap up the program.
