Cleveland teacher is Street Law’s 2009 Educator of the Year

Lori Urodgy Eiler to be honored for her innovative curricula and devotion to students

Street Law is proud to announce Lori Urodgy Eiler as the recipient of the 2009 Educator of the Year Award.  Ms. Eiler is a social studies teacher at Shaw High School Leadership Academy in East Cleveland, Ohio, where she has been teaching for three decades in one of Street Law’s oldest and most enduring programs.

The Educator of the Year Award, sponsored by Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, honors those who have demonstrated excellence in and devotion to teaching law-related subjects.  Ms. Eiler was nominated and selected for her dedication to students and hard work in creating innovative, inspired curricula.

Ms. Eiler’s teaching methods extend far beyond her own classroom.  She works in partnership with a variety of outside organizations like Street Law, the ABA, the ACLU, bar associations, and law schools to provide dynamic coursework for her students that has been replicated by other educators across the country.  Ms. Eiler also shares her expertise by consulting with other schools in Northern Ohio and working with them directly to strengthen their Street Law programs. 

At Shaw High School Leadership Academy, Ms. Eiler also has a long list of accomplishments.  She assisted in the foundation of a student leadership group, started “Be the Change” and “Facing History” projects at the Academy, and serves as the school’s mock trial coach, earning the best record of mock trial accomplishments in the state of Ohio.  Her coaching helps students develop a variety of valuable skills and has also lead her team to numerous state championship victories.  For the last decade, the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education has honored phenomenal mock trial teachers with the Lori Urogdy Eiler Mock Trial Teacher of the Year Award. 

Lori Urodgy Eiler will be presented with the award at Street Law’s Fifth Annual Street Law Awards Dinner on April 22, 2009, in Washington, D.C.
