Street Law, Inc., in partnership with the
Soros Foundation, is establishing an Open
Society Street Law Program which currently
involves 13 countries in Eastern Europe and
Central Asia. The goals of this program are
to: provide training and technical assistance
to partner country teams to initiate and
implement new Street Law programs and to
build a regional network of Street Law programs
from which individual country teams can learn
about what has already been done in the region
and draw expertise and share experiences
as they develop materials and create new
programs. The following countries are currently
involved under this initiative: Albania, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Romania, Russia, Slovakia and Ukraine. This program will continue to expand as
new countries join the project.
The Ford Foundation is also providing support
to Street Law, Inc.'s current efforts in
Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and St. Petersburg, Russia. Organizations and individuals are receiving
technical assistance and training which will
facilitate the development and institutionalization
of new Street Law programs. Activities under
this project are being incorporated into
the larger regional effort sponsored by the
Soros Foundation.
Street Law, Inc. conducted a three year NED-funded
project in Hungary where the Institute for Legal Assistance
and Education in the Law (ILAEL) produced
the first ever book of its kind in Eastern
Europe, Mindennapok Joga ("Everyday
Law"), and has trained teams of lawyers,
judges and teachers in 18 schools in over
10 cities. This work continues through funding
provided by the Ford Foundation in order
to expand and institutionalize the program.
Street Law, Inc. has also worked in Romania and Bulgaria with local non-governmental organizations
to establish Street Law programs. The work
in Romania will continue with support from the Soros
Foundation.
In Central Asia, Street Law, Inc. has worked
in Kazakstan where the Kazak Association for Citizen
Education in the Law (KACEL) trained law
students to teach Kazak high school students
how they can participate in their newly created
democratic government. Additionally, in Central
Asia, the United States Information Agency
(USIA) sponsored Street Law, Inc. staff for
travel to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan in August
1995 to conduct initial training in establishing
civic and legal education programs. Again,
this work continues under the new Open Society
Street Law program.
