Urmika Devi
law student
Urmika Devi was initiated into Street Law in 1998 through Youth Act!, a pilot program providing high school students advocacy and leadership skills to create change in their communities. At the time a sophomore, Urmika and her peers testified before the Pennsylvania House Transportation Committee and successfully lobbied state representatives and senators to reduce teenage fatality by implementing a graduated driver licensing program. In 1999, Urmika was one of two youth panelists at the National Conference of State Legislators Traffic Safety Workshop, and later assisted Street Law to help plan the expansion of Youth Act! to other areas of the nation.
Urmika had a double major in International Affairs and Economics from the George Washington University and is currently a law student at Temple University Beasley School of Law. She further developed her interest in youth and alternative education while working as a consultant to EQUIP3 / Youth Trust, a project implemented by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Also an active choreographer and dancer, Urmika produces work through her company, the Urmika Devi Dance Collective. As a strong advocate for the arts, she is a founding member and co-chair of the South Asian Theater Arts Movement, a professional network of South Asian artists, academics, producers, and arts administrators across the country.
Urmika is also a member of the working committee for Project HomeSpun, an upcoming initiative by the Smithsonian Institution.
